Now that the ‘ringing’ season is in full swing our volunteers are remarkably busy checking our Barn Owl nest boxes across the Wirral. A similar pattern to last year is developing whereby most of the breeding is in the South of the Wirral, with the first chicks being a brood of 4.
Two productive days resulted in the ‘ringing’ of seven pullus one day and 6 the next, with 3 tiny chicks to be ringed at a future date.
Happily, this included the first two chicks which were very feisty, at a remote site in the North of the Wirral.
Finally, to use the quote ‘never say never’ this nest box was installed 15 years ago and has never had a Barn Owl in it until this year. The photos confirm that there is a male Barn Owl roosting in it and there is a female in another nest box on a nearby tree, and she has three newly hatched nestlings.
